Youth's Role in Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

With the development of human civilization, scientists have invented different technologies to make human life more comfortable on earth. Use of technology has flooded in every corner of the globe. Though development has many positive impacts, ignoring it's negative impact won't be a worth game. It is therefore the term "Sustainable Development" has been coined for the first time in Brundtland report, 1987 by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development. Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs. Economic growth, Social inclusion and Environmental protection are needed to be harmonized to achieve sustainable development. These elements are interconnected and all are crucial for the well-being of individuals and societies. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force.

One out of every six people worldwide, there are 1.2 billion youths aged between 15 and 24 years globally in 2015. This new generation can contribute huge for the environmental protection and sustainable development. By 2030, the target date for the sustainable development goals, the number of youth is estimated to have grown nearly 1.3 billion. Youth can be a positive force for sustainable development when provided with the knowledge and opportunity they need to thrive. Young people being able to adopt at spreading new habits and technologies can contribute for secure world. Youths can be actively engaged in different social sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Mail, blogs, etc) at local, national, and global level in raising awareness. Youth, a change agent could organize different creative and innovative programs for raising awareness among themselves and other local people.

H. Jackson Brown, Jr. told, "The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today." Youths are future of this planet, so youth must do best today for their better tomorrow. Today's youth must change their personal life style for better future. They must consume less, use renewable energy, save electricity, recycle, work in Eco-groups, vote for environmental protection and sustainable development concerned candidate, aware other and etc. Such actions may be small on their own, but when hundreds or thousands or millions of youth do them, they become huge to attain sustainable development goals and for better future of the only living planet, the mother earth.
